There's almost nothing as beautiful as truly sparkling jewelry. Whether it's a garnet ring, a blood coral bracelet, or an amethyst necklace, well-maintained jewelry simply looks better for longer.
But... how do you properly clean jewelry without damaging it?
In this blog, I'll guide you step by step. Simple, safe, and effective so you can make your jewelry shine as it's meant to.
Why cleaning jewelry is so important
Jewelry goes through a lot every day:
- skin oils
- perfume and cream
- dust and dirt
This causes them to lose their luster. Fortunately, you can easily fix this yourself.
π Did you know that regular cleaning helps maintain the shine and lifespan of your jewelry?
Step-by-step: how to safely clean jewelry
This is the safest method for almost all jewelry, including gemstones such as sapphire, ruby, amethyst, and garnet.
Step 1 β Make a mild soapy solution
- Use lukewarm water (not hot!)
- Add a few drops of mild dish soap
This is the safest and most effective method for most gemstones
Step 2 β Let your jewelry soak for a while
- Place your jewelry in the water for 5β10 minutes
- This will naturally loosen dirt
Please note: some stones (like opal or coral) should preferably not be soaked
Step 3 β Gently clean
- Use a soft toothbrush or cloth
- Gently clean around the setting
Hard brushes can cause scratches
Step 4 β Rinse
- Rinse with lukewarm water
- Ensure no soap residue remains
Step 5 β Dry & shine
- Pat dry with a soft cloth
- And... here's our tip π
π‘ Use a jewelry polishing cloth (like the one you receive from us with your purchases)
These are perfect for:
- adding extra shine
- removing fingerprints
- quickly refreshing your jewelry
β¨ Our tip (and gift for you)
With every order on Prelovedjewel.com, you receive a free jewelry polishing cloth.
And believe us:
you'll use that cloth more often than you think.
A quick polish:
- before you leave the house
- after a day of wearing
- or just before you meet someone
Β Little effort, big difference.
Please note: not all stones are the same
While the above method works for many pieces of jewelry, there are exceptions.
β οΈ Be extra careful with:
- Blood coral β do not soak, only gently wipe
- Porous stones β can absorb moisture
- Soft gemstones β preferably just a cloth
Some stones are sensitive to water, heat, or chemicals
β What you better not do
Many "tips" on the internet are actually not good for your jewelry at all:
Avoid:
- β toothpaste
- β baking soda (can cause scratches)
- β aggressive cleaning agents
- β boiling water
These can damage your jewelry or make it dull
Daily maintenance (more important than you think)
Do you want your jewelry to stay beautiful?
Do this:
- Wipe clean after wearing
- Store separately (prevents scratches)
- Do not wear while exercising/showering
Regular light cleaning is better than occasional thorough cleaning
Finally
Jewelry is more than just accessories.
They tell a story. Your story.
And with a little attention, they will continue to do so β for years to come.
So grab that cloth, give your favorite piece of jewelry a little loveβ¦
and watch it come back to life.
